Cage Mechanism
The structural configuration in which environmental conditions decouple individual action from outcome, producing depression at population scale as a systemic rather than clinical phenomenon. Modernity progressively removes the coupling between agency and reward; the depression epidemic is what the population produces when that coupling is broken.
Child-Modulated Maturity
The theory that human developmental maturity is triggered by the assumption of dependent responsibility for children rather than reached through chronological progression. Ordinary time-based milestones do not complete the maturity process — the developmental threshold is child-triggered, and civilisations that remove the trigger produce populations that never complete it.
Civilisational Architecture
The seven-paper analytical framework identifying the structural conditions of civilisational flourishing, their dismantling under modernity, and what reconstruction — or continuity after collapse — requires.
Conformity Pathway
The cultural-conformity route by which family-formation behaviour is set at population scale, as distinct from financial-incentive routes. Every pro-natal policy attempted across the developed world over three decades has aimed at cash transfers and tax credits; the conformity pathway operates upstream and routes around them. The corrective operates at the level of cultural architecture, at the point of maximum leverage.
Discretionary Enforcement Capture
The mechanism by which discretionary enforcement authority becomes systematically leveraged in favour of particular interests, ideologies, or protected classes — a specific amplification of regulatory capture operating at the enforcement layer.
Empathy Predator
A political or institutional actor that exploits activated empathy in a host population as a strategic weapon — inducing empathy-driven policy or behavioural response in service of the predator's own ends. Distinguished from the individual-scale manipulator by operating on populations and through institutions rather than in interpersonal relationships.
Energetic Core
The demanding, forceful, self-defending fraction that every living tradition carries and transmits across generations — the internal component that maintains the tradition's capacity to resist erosion and reproduce itself under civilisational pressure.
The Entry State
The developmental configuration under which the maturity threshold can be crossed — the necessary structural precondition, distinct from the transition itself. Names what a human must be, environmentally and structurally, to become capable of reaching the child-triggered maturity threshold.
Flourishing Civilisation
A civilisation viewed as a two-level flourishing system — individual wellbeing and population continuation are jointly constitutive of civilisational flourishing, and neither can be optimised alone. Population-scale continuation is not a downstream consequence of individual flourishing but a co-equal component of it; a civilisation that produces high individual wellbeing while failing to continue itself is not flourishing.
Frontier-MES
The minimum efficient scale of the technology frontier — the smallest community that can independently sustain the leading technological edge of its era. Not a fixed value; a function of the era's technology, moving by orders of magnitude across recorded history. Frontier-MES was a city in antiquity, a state through the industrial era, continental for leading-edge silicon in the present. The movement of frontier-MES — not any claim about virtue, population, or will — determines whether a small community can hold the whole of its civilisation's technology or only part of it.
Generational Stake
The determinant of political time-horizon produced by biological and familial investment in the next generation — the mechanism by which whether a voter has children materially reshapes their electoral incentive structure.
Idiot Reading
The Anglosphere right's persistent structural misreading of Trump-era US politics as the personal deficiency of one man rather than as a coherent response to institutional divergence. Names the diagnostic pattern by which non-US Anglosphere political classes fail to identify what the US electorate is actually responding to.
Madisonian Function of God
God as a Madisonian institutional-design element — the load-bearing role God plays in aligning individual self-interest with collectively good outcomes, independent of any question about belief in the divine. Religious traditions functioned as behavioural-code enforcement mechanisms selected by Darwinian pressure at civilisational scale; the "belief" question is downstream of the function.
Monument Problem
The analytical puzzle of how ancient civilisations mobilised the collective resource capacity to produce monument-scale works — the Baalbek trilithons, the pyramids, the megalithic complexes — which modern engineering intuition cannot readily explain. Prothean's answer identifies the alignment of cosmological framework, governance, social identity, and collective purpose as the mobilisation mechanism.
Multilateral Illusion
The Western misreading of the rules-based international order as functionally intact while adversarial actors weaponised its institutions, norms, and financing against the system itself. Names the diagnostic error of interpreting Russian, Chinese, Iranian, and Venezuelan use of multilateral instruments as engagement rather than as extraction.
Outcomes Without Action
The specific mechanism named in The Cage We Built — the structural configuration in which reward, status, and social validation arrive independently of individual agency, producing depression at population scale. Names the same phenomenon as Cage Mechanism, with emphasis on the causal decoupling itself.
Predatory Empathy
Empathy weaponised as a strategic tool for manipulation, extraction, or control — mimicking authentic empathic connection while lacking recognition of the other's autonomous reality.
Rhodesian Franchise
The historical qualified-franchise system of Southern Rhodesia (from 1899), referenced by Prothean as an analytical instantiation of a stake-based alternative to universal suffrage. The reference is to the structural design of the franchise itself, not to the political context in which it was implemented.
Structural Capture
Institutional capture at the structural level — where the incentive architecture, appointment pathways, and self-selection filters of an institution produce systematically captured outputs independent of any individual actor's motivation. Distinct from personnel capture (the standard framing), where individuals are compromised; structural capture persists after every individual is replaced.
Tenant Electorate
An electorate composed of net-beneficiary and no-stake voters — voters who are net beneficiaries of state spending, hold no propertied stake in the future, and have staked no biological investment in the next generation. Universal suffrage systematically selects for this composition and produces predictable behaviour from the voters it selects: transfer expansion, deferral of consequence, erosion of long-horizon decision-making.
The Anchor
The structural conditions under which stable identity formation becomes possible in an atomised environment — the load-bearing framework a person must have available to develop a coherent sense of self.
The Threshold
The developmental transition point at which human maturity is completed. Prothean's contribution: the transition is not chronological but triggered — specifically by the assumption of dependent responsibility for children.
Unified Social Energy
The collective mobilisation capacity produced by the complete alignment of cosmological framework, governance, social identity, and collective purpose — sufficient to convert small city-states into coherent collective organisms capable of monument-scale effort sustained across generational timescales.
Unilateral Delusion
Europe's misreading of American underwriting of the Western security architecture as American aggression. Names the diagnostic error by which European (and to a lesser extent Australian) political classes interpreted the good produced by American power as a threat produced by American power.
Vertical Trust Transmission
The multi-generational transmission of behavioural codes via religious tradition — the mechanism by which a civilisation maintains trust in codes not chosen by the current generation but inherited from previous generations. Prothean identifies vertical trust transmission as the unsolved problem of post-religious modernity: the function has not been replaced, only removed.
